OUR BROTHER AND OUR FRIEND

19 MAY 1967 - 3 DECEMBER 2016

Welcome to Martin's website.

In 2012 Martin was diagnosed with Prostate cancer. He decided to take a "watch and wait" approach to the tumour, and with a very healthy lifestyle it did not change much over the next two years. However, about April 2015, things took a turn for the worse, and a scan revealed that the cancer had spread to his bones.

Over the next year he had two sessions of radiation therapy, to target certain troublesome tumours, but ongoing pain in his pelvis meant that he was completely bed bound for the last nine months. He kept himself busy with his varied interests via Youtube videos and the internet. He also wrote many articles to help others.

Last Friday afternoon (2 December) he looked very drawn in the face, and in the evening he said he felt like just going unconscious, as he felt very weak, but didn't want to eat anything. He had been doing really well, considering, up until the day before. He had a good appetite, took lots of fluids, and was still mostly mentally with it, although he was very thin. His pain was under control. We said goodnight about 9pm, and he went to sleep.

I woke about 4am on Saturday and got up and lit the fire. He had a rattly sound in his throat, which I knew meant he might not be here long, but then he just stopped breathing while he was still asleep, without any other warning. I'm so thankful that I was there, that we had a good talk the night before, and that he died in his sleep, without any pain or stress, which is how he wanted to go.

For one who was so active, especially in the outdoors, Martin's long illness was quite an ordeal for him to endure. Being a committed Christian helped him immensely to cope with it. He understood that this world is involved in a long, cosmic struggle between good and evil, and that the presence of evil in this world doesn't mean that God is not there, or that He doesn't care about us. Martin spent much of his life finding answers for the big questions of life: Where did we come from? Why are we here? and Where are we going? We have included Martin's article on the question of "Good God : Bad World - Why does God allow evil and suffering?" on this website, as it is a question that many struggle with: "Why do bad things happen to good people?"

We hope it will help others who are struggling with difficulties in their lives.

"Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.

For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory."       2 Corinthians 4:16, 17

Thankyou so much!

We would like to thank everyone who shared encouraging words with Martin, to help him on his journey.

They were much appreciated! Often, when I read the messages out to him, he would lie in stunned silence, comprehending what had just been said about him.

The following quotes proved to be so true:

"Many there are who bring their precious gifts for the dead. As they stand about the cold, silent form, words of love are freely spoken. Tenderness, appreciation, devotion, all are lavished upon one who sees not nor hears. Had these words been spoken when the weary spirit needed them so much, when the ear could hear and the heart could feel, how precious would have been their fragrance!" The Desire of Ages page 560

"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones."

Proverbs 16:24
